Leadership and Its Effect on Productivity

A leadership role is a position where a leader can gather support from others (employees or followers) to achieve a cause or goal. It involves influencing people as a result of direct contact or charisma to produce impacts that contribute to the organization’s growth. Leaders shape the group’s behavior and drive the team through relationship and management strategies to produce team commitment toward a specific goal.

Leadership involves being aware of the workers’ background, skills, and experience to assign tasks that will result in maximum productivity. This enhances employee job satisfaction and plays an important part in the success of an organization.

The link between leadership and its effect on productivity lies in the workforce of that organization. A leader must have a combination of influence, integrity, and a good disposition to properly motivate employees to do their jobs as best they can. These qualities are not limited to professionals who work in the managerial sector of an organization. Officials in other sectors showing traits of leadership that would be effective on other employees in an organization are very important in mobilizing the workforce. To maximize productivity, a leader must also be emotionally intelligent with an understanding of empathy, self-awareness, motivation, and relationship management strategies.

There are different styles of leadership, namely visionary leadership, democratic leadership, participative leadership, coaching leadership, pacesetting leadership, and coaching leadership. Leaders should study and internalize these styles, as each one will come in handy in different situations. A particular situation may require the combination of two or more styles of leadership.

Democratic leadership uses the agreement of parties involved to promote participation. Democratic leaders generally try to create personal links to work through rewards after participation using the participative style of leadership. Democratic and participative leadership usually work well with a coaching style of leadership where leaders use further training to mold employees into a better version of themselves to produce the best possible output. As a coach, it is also crucial to have visionary leadership, which is the kind that directs workers towards achieving a vision or goal in which further training comes in handy.

There are also styles of leadership that have produced mostly negative results. Commanding leadership involves giving commands and expecting immediate results. It usually works together with pacesetting leadership, where commanding leaders use their discernment to hire employees they feel would be excellent for the organization and not need too much mobilization or motivation to do the work. This often results in resentful, burnout employees who are lackadaisical and may end up destabilizing the organization.

There are techniques available to a leader to maximize their effect on employees’ productivity. The first is understanding the difference between working harder and productivity. Leaders should take the approach of working smarter and not harder to be able to inspire employees’ devotion to work. When employees see that a leader cares for their well-being in all aspects instead of harping on the number of tasks completed, they are more likely to give their best to work instead of just trying to get through the day.

Providing a template for employees to understand the day’s goal or company’s vision goes a long way toward maximizing productivity. Employees who are made to feel like they are an essential part of delivering service alongside the growth of the company can increase employee engagement in day-to-day tasks.

It is also important to include employees in the organization’s decision-making processes. When leaders manage employees using democratic, visionary, and participative leadership styles, they tend to derive better results in productivity than using a mostly commanding style that produces mainly negative results.
